Melodic segmentation: evaluating the performance of algorithms and musical experts

چکیده
We review several segmentation algorithms, qualitatively highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. We also provide a detailed quantitative evaluation of Temperley’s Grouper and Cambouropoulos’ Local Boundary Detection Model. In order to benchmark the algorithms’ performance against musicians, we compiled a corpus of different melodic excerpts and collected individual segmentations from 19 musicians. We then evaluated each algorithm’s flexibility and practicality by running several experiments using large, hand-segmented portions of the Essen folk song collection and the melodies from our corpus.

Melodic segmentation: evaluating the performance of of algorithms and musical experts
We review several segmentation algorithms, qualitatively highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. We also provide a detailed quantitative evaluation of two existing approaches, Temperley’s Grouper and Cambouropoulos’ Local Boundary Detection Model. In order to facilitate the comparison of an algorithm’s performance with human behavior, we compiled a corpus of melodic excerpts in different m...
متن کاملInfluence of Musical Similarity on Melodic Segmentation: Representations and Algorithms
In this paper a computational model is presented that extracts patterns from a given melodic surface and, then, following the assumption that the beginning and ending points of 'significant' repeating musical patterns influence the segmentation of a musical surface, the discovered patterns are used as a means to determine probable segmentation points of the melody. ‘Significant’ patterns are de...
متن کاملMUSICAL PARALLELISM AND MELODIC SEGMENTATION : A Computational Approach
DESPITE THE CONSIDERATION THAT musical parallelism is an important factor for musical segmentation, there have been relatively few systematic attempts to describe exactly how it affects grouping processes. The main problem is that musical parallelism itself is difficult to formalize. In this study, a computational model that extracts melodic patterns from a given melodic surface is presented. F...
متن کاملThe musical language Elements of Persian musical language: modes, rhythm and syntax
In treating the subject of musical language, a Persian musician would be intrinsically drawn to the structural similarities between the Persian music and language. Indeed Persian music and language are extremely related in their metrics, intonations and structural phrases (syntax). Although we will draw upon this relationship, our aim in this article is to present “music as a language,” c...
متن کاملOn Optimizing the Editing Algorithms for Evaluating Similarity Between Monophonic Musical Sequences
Melody is an important property for the perceptual description of Western musical pieces. In the monophonic context, retrieval systems based on melodic similarity generally consider sequences of pitches and durations. Algorithms that have been proposed for measuring melodic similarity rely on geometric representations, string matching techniques, etc. Adaptations of editing algorithms, mainly a...
